Any faculty or staff member is welcome to attend this workshop regardless of your current level of understanding of Life Design. Lunch will be provided. Join us in the Planetarium for the next public talk in the Expanding Boundaries Speakers Series, titled “From Spiral Nebulae to Island Universes: Measuring the Size of the Milky Way and its Place in the Scale of the Universe” presented by Kate Dellenbusch, BGSU Department of Physics & Astronomy Throughout history, humans have looked up at the sky and noticed a milky band stretching across the sky. However, it has only been about a century since the nature and size of the Milky Way has been well understood and that the “spiral nebulae” observed in the sky were in fact separate galaxies outside the Milky Way. In this talk, I’ll discuss some of the observations and theories of scientists throughout history as humanity attempted to understand the size and structure of the Milky Way. This program is the last in a series of six sessions on a wide range of interdisciplinary topics, each with a connection to astronomy. The talk will follow the regularly scheduled 6:30 p.m. Planetarium show. All Expanding Boundaries Speakers Series events are free and open to the public. Join us for our Black History Month Guest Lecture, hosted by the Department of History at BGSU. Dr. Modupe Labode is the Curator of the Division of Political History in the African American History Curatorial Collective at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institute. She will present: "Reckoning with Remembrance: Interpreting the Life and Legacy of Emmett Till at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History." Her talk will focus on the interpretation of a vandalized historical marker commemorating the site where Emmett Till's body was recovered from the Tallahatchie River in 1955. The talk will focus on the exhibition team's ongoing relationship with the communities in Mississippi that created historical markers for the sites related to Emmett Till's life and legacy in Mississippi. She will focus on practices of Restorative History and the meaning of interpreting Black history in a general history museum. This lecture is free and open to the public. The Mike and Sara Kuhlin Award honors rising seniors (current juniors) who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and contributions during their time at BGSU. Recipients are selected based on nomination letters and supporting materials—students cannot apply for this award themselves. Eligibility Criteria: Completed at least 75 credit hours, with plans to graduate the following spring Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 Special consideration is given to students involved in the C. Raymond Marvin Center for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement Selection Process: Nominees will be evaluated on their leadership development and impact as a BGSU student. All nominations will be reviewed and ranked by staff from the Marvin Center for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement. Award Details: Recipients will receive a $5,000 award in recognition of their leadership and contributions to the BGSU community.
